Who: First United Methodist Church
What: Groundbreaking for construction of new sanctuary
When: Saturday, April 29 at 6 p.m.
Where: On concrete foundation slab at corner of Poplar and Second
Why: Construction will begin May 1 on new sanctuary to replace historic sanctuary destroyed by fire
Plans call for a $4.1 million building that blends the traditional and modern to replace the 113-year-old sanctuary that burned in 2006.
The design makes extensive use of glass to help shine the church’s light on the downtown neighborhood it serves. The existing frame of steel girders sitting on a concrete slab will be incorporated into the new building. Generous donors have provided about $2 million of the money needed.
First Methodist plans internal and external fundraising campaigns to raise the remaining $2 million and reaffirm the church’s ministry to downtown Memphis.
